Destroyed by fire in February of 2020, the original small house was likely built by Ebenezer Hearne in 1850. Ogden King significantly expanded the house after his marriage to Ebenezer’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Hearne. King was a successful physician from eastern North Carolina and prospered via his medical practice as well as through lucrative land speculation and commercial development deals in Albemarle following the arrival of the railroad and the textile industry.
